The Commonwealth, state and territory governments have agreed to jointly fund and develop the program, which will contribute up to $122 million over five years to the program, focussed mainly on people aged 50 years or under.
About 1000 people aged under 50 with a disability are living in residential aged care. Under the program, younger people with disability currently living in residential aged care will be offered a care needs assessment, and where appropriate, alternative accommodation and care options can be made available. Those who wish to stay in their current accommodation will benefit from a range of age-appropriate services.
The program is part of the $1.1 Better Health for all Australians Action Plan agreed to by the Council of Australian Governments. The Action Plan also includes improved assessment processes for residential and community aged care. A new system to support older people, people with disabilities and people leaving hospital to navigate the care system and receive better care in their own homes, will be available by December 2007.
